How to change the background of a video without a green screen.

To change the background of a video without a green screen, upload the clip to an AI video editor like Aisma and describe the new place in one sentence, such as “change the gray wall behind him to a cozy home office.” Aisma builds the new place behind the person in every frame and keeps your framing and sound. Rotoscoping and background-remover apps also work, with more hands-on time.

  • One sentence describes the new place. No green screen or masks.
  • The person, framing, length and sound stay as filmed.
  • Ask for the light on them to match the new place.

Real Aisma edit

A gray wall, now a home office.

A real Aisma edit of an 11.5-second clip, made from one request and no photos.

What stays

  • The person, their face and their gestures
  • Your framing and the camera
  • Your clip’s length and original sound

What changes

  • Everything behind the person
  • The light on them, when you ask for it

FOUR WAYS

Four ways to put
a new place behind someone.

Every method answers two questions: how the person is kept apart from what’s behind them, and where the new place comes from. A green screen settles the first before you film; the other three work on clips you already have.

The manual steps follow Adobe’s and CapCut’s own help pages as of November 3, 2026; menus can differ in your version.

METHOD 1 · AISMA

Change the background
with Aisma in three steps.

  1. Upload your clip

MP4 or MOV, 2–60 seconds, up to 500 MB, vertical, square or horizontal. The edit keeps your framing, length and sound.

  2. Describe the new place

Name the place and its light, like “a cozy home office with a warm desk lamp,” then say who and what stays.

  3. Pick a quality, then generate

Choose 720p or 1080p and press Generate. The finished video goes to your private Library.

Try it on your video

Try this request
on your video.

This is the prompt we sent for the clip at the top, word for word: one sentence builds the room, one keeps him as he is, and one asks for the room’s warm light on him.

We ran it once at 720p and kept that result. Aisma added a second lamp, a wall clock and gray curtains the brief didn’t name.

The brief we sent, word for word

Change the plain gray wall behind him to a cozy home office with a wooden bookshelf, a green plant and a warm desk lamp. Keep him, his white T-shirt, his face, his expressions and the camera. Match the warm light on him.

METHOD 2 · GREEN SCREEN

Key out a green screen
in your editor.

The classic way is planned before you film: an evenly lit green backdrop and nothing green on the person. In Adobe Premiere, apply the Ultra Key effect, click the green with its Key Color eyedropper and put the new background on a track below.

Spill Suppression clears green reflected on skin and hair. CapCut’s desktop editor has the same tool as Chroma key, under Video > Remove BG. A clean key gives the most control, but only on footage shot for it.

METHOD 3 · AFTER EFFECTS

No green screen?
Rotoscope the person.

Without a backdrop, you separate the person yourself. In After Effects, Roto Brush does it: you paint strokes on the person and the background, it draws the boundary, and you fix the selection as it carries from frame to frame.

Then lay the new background underneath. Hair, fast hands and motion blur take the most fixes, and the light on the person still belongs to the old room.

METHOD 4 · BACKGROUND REMOVER

Let an app
cut the person out.

Remover apps find the outline for you. In CapCut’s desktop editor, select the clip and turn on Video > Remove BG > Auto removal, then set a color, an image or a video behind the cut-out.

It’s quick for one person against a plain wall. Check the edges around hair and hands; a still picture behind them stays still while your camera moves.

WRITING THE REQUEST

Name the place,
then what stays.

Describe the place, not how to cut the person out. Our office brief names a bookshelf, a plant and a desk lamp and leaves the rest to Aisma; its own page shows what came back. Then list who and what stays, and add a line about the light.

For a real place, like your shop, add its photo and call it Photo 1; an edit takes up to 10 photos. Aisma treats a photo as a guide, not a backdrop to paste in, so some details will differ.

BEFORE YOU POST

Check the edges
and the light.

The new place was never filmed, so Aisma generates it. Watch the result full screen and check hair, hands, anything the person holds and any lettering, which can come out changed.

To fix one part, open Clips under the finished video, pick the clip and say what to change, like “make the lamp light warmer on his face.”

REQUESTS TO BORROW

New places
for clips you already have.

Written like the office brief; none were rendered for this page.

  • Product demo

Change the messy counter behind the blender to a clean white kitchen. Keep my hands and the blender.

  • Fitness reel

Change the garage behind me to a rooftop at sunrise. Keep me, my mat and the camera move.

  • Wedding clip

Change the hotel hallway behind the couple to a garden path with string lights at dusk. Keep both of them.

  • Part of the clip

Change the background to a snowy street from 0:05 to the end. Keep me as filmed.

A moving camera works too: our snowy forest example turns a corridor into a winter forest, brief included.

A FEW GOOD QUESTIONS

Changing backgrounds,
answered.

Can I change a video background without a green screen?

Yes. Aisma changes the background of a clip you already shot from a written request, with no green screen or masks. Rotoscoping or a remover app also works without one.

Will the person look cut out and pasted in?

It shouldn’t: nothing is cut out. Aisma renders the person and the new place together in every frame and can match the light on them, as the warm lamps do here.

Does it work when the camera moves?

Yes, the new place moves with your camera. In our snowy forest edit, the camera backs away from a walking woman for all 10 seconds.

Can I export a transparent background?

Not yet: you get a finished MP4 with the new place in it. Transparent exports are on our roadmap; if you need one, tell us at support@aisma.ai.

How long can the video be?

Clips of 2 to 60 seconds, as MP4 or MOV up to 500 MB. You get an MP4 at 720p or 1080p with the same length, framing and sound; split longer videos into parts of up to 60 seconds.

Is my video private?

Yes. Your clip, photos and result are private to your account. Without a weekly plan, the finished video stays in your Library for 72 hours, so save your copy.

Are these real results?

Yes. The office clip at the top is a real Aisma edit of a stock clip from Pexels, made from the brief printed on this page. Before → After views show the original and the edit at the same moment of the clip, never cropped, sped up or retouched. Your result depends on your clip and request.
